The bad times – the break-up of his marriage to Su, the loss of his youngest son, 27-year-old Bo (who died suddenly and unexpectedly from natural causes while on holiday in Tuscany in November 2011), the apparent professional failure after the demise of Team Four and after the completion of the Pompidou Centre, and, of course, the memory of those 20 years of academic failure – he takes in his stride, publicly at least.
