Some churches opposed to same-sex marriages, such as Sikh temples, have started opting out of the civil portion of the marriage anyway. All it means is that the priest can no longer sign the paperwork making the marriage legal. Instead, a couple would have to marry at the local registrar and then have their marriage solemnized at the church.
