There are factors that pull the Liberal Democrats in the other direction. The seats that the party is most likely to lose are northern ones in which Labour is the challenger. A rump Lib Dem parliamentary group, post-2015, will be more southern-flavoured and Tory-orientated. Furthermore, the party has got used to seeing and treating Labour as the opposition. Were it not for his views on the EU, Nick Clegg could pass as a centrist Conservative. The same is broadly true of some Liberal ministers, such as Jeremy Browne and (especially) David Laws.
