If Fairfax Financial is able to shut down the BlackBerry handset business at reasonable cost, it could end up controlling good enterprise software assets at a knock-down price, with plenty of cash to invest. Meanwhile, the patents can be sold on or licensed to former rivals with no need for reciprocal payments in order to build BlackBerry handsets.
